Born in Gloucester County, Va., Walter Reed received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1869 and another M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1871. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1876. Reed served in many areas throughout the country, including Fort Lowell, Az., and Baltimore, before becoming professor of bacteriology at the Army Medical School in 1893. Incorporated in the District of Columbia in April, 1904, the Walter Reed Memorial Association was formed to raise $25,000 for two purposes. First, interest accrued from the principal sum would be given to Major Reed's widow and daughter for the duration of their lives. After their deaths the Association would devote the funds to creating a permanent memorial to Reed in the District of Columbia.
